Purpose
The intention of this program is to encourage a deepening of our meditation practice and, within the refuge of sangha (spiritual community), to share insights and support for living with wisdom and compassion. We'll begin each of our 13 meetings with a half-hour of meditation followed by an investigation of True Refuge by Tara Brach, PH.D.
In this wonderful new book by a beloved spiritual teacher and author of Radical Acceptance, the classic Buddhist refuges of love, truth and awareness are presented from a fresh, modern perspective. This is a beautifully crafted "guide to finding our inner sanctuary of peace and wisdom in the midst of difficulty." It will be a rich source for our sangha’s study and discussion.
"This is a special book, lovely, loving, wise, and helpful. It is like having a sage and caring friend sit with you, offering comfort, insight, and guidance for your own true journey home."
-Jack Kornfield
Note: there will be no meeting on November 29, 2013.
Props: There are folding chairs, blankets, bolsters, mats, and other props at the studio for our use.
Registration
In keeping with the tradition of Theravadan Buddhism, the teachings will be freely offered. Participants are welcome to make a donation (dana) of any amount for the instruction. To pay for the costs of using the studio and its resources, a registration fee of $78 is requested. (Scholarships are available.)

Doorway to the Divine:
Movement, Mantra & Meditation
This series of classes is designed for mantra meditation. Chanting Sanskrit mantras is one of the world's oldest means of finding bliss. From the Eastern philosophy perspective, the bliss we are seeking is already inside us. Modern science agrees; bliss is a chemical state that the body itself produces, and we are hard-wired to seek.
Chanting affects the areas of the brain that create our sense of where our body ends and the world begins. It slows and steadies breathing, producing hormone and neurological changes in the body that feel simultaneously calming and thrilling.
Each session will begin with brief discussion on the pronunciation and meaning of the mantra being chanted; followed by a gentle and restorative asana practice to warm the body and prepare it for sitting. We will chant the mantra, and use the vibrations we create as a means to ease us into seated meditation, closing with a long, deep savasana.
"Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics."Dates/Mantras:

Teacher:
Karen Sprute-Francovich, M.A, ERYT-500 began Yoga in 1974 as a senior in high school when the sisters at her all girls’ catholic school hired a yoga teacher to come in and teach P.E. classes. She has been practicing ever since and began teaching in 1986. From 1986 – 2001 she also maintained a thriving practice as a Licensed Body Work Therapist but in 2001 she began to dedicate all of her time to Yoga and founded Garden Street School of Yoga. Karen’s earlier study and teaching were primarily Iyengar influenced. In 2001 she earned the level of Certified Anusara Yoga teacher. The Yoga she teaches now has its roots in the ground of these two methods but continues to grow and evolve based on her practice, teaching and study, and includes both form (alignment) and flow (vinyasa). In addition to her studio classes, she teaches Yoga Immersions, Teacher Training Programs, retreats and workshops.
Karen’s teaching and studio work is supported and inspired by the amazing local community of teachers and practitioners at Garden Street Yoga, by her husband, her 2 grown sons and her cat, all of whom are Yoga practitioners (the cat especially).

Radiant Darkness:
Myth & Metaphor of the Goddess Kali
Fierce, glowing effulgently like the full moon in the night sky, holding a trident that flashes like lightning and a knife etched with sacred mantras, Kali stands peaceful and content, suffused with the fragrances of jasmine, rose and sandlewood! Kali is the Protectress, the Mother. She shines with the brilliance of a million black fires of dissolution and her body is bathed in vibuthi (sacred ash). Just as the ocean appears deep blue-black due to it's fathomless depth, so too Kali appears dark due to her infinite depth.
In this workshop we'll explore the mythos of this dark goddess through mantra, asana & meditation and we'll discover how her stories reveal our own radiant depth.

Haramara Retreat
Sayulita, Mexico
Our spirits swell and our hearts unfurl in the presence of beauty and grace. With the opening of our hearts we create more space inside us for the Universe to dwell and dance. Here on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, with the ocean serenading us, the sun caressing us, and the wide open sky lifting us up, we will delve into the vast capacity of our hearts. We will investigate the potency of asana, pranayama and meditation, as well as community, good food and deep relaxation. Each day will include two yoga sessions, three delicious meals and time to relax. There will be plenty of free time, including a full day of leisure to explore the splendor around us and inquire into the radiance within.
Haramara Retreat, located outside the tiny fishing village of Sayulita, just 45 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, is truly inspiring. It offers a tranquil, secluded and beautiful setting in which to explore yoga and nature as a spiritual practice. The yoga spaces are open-air palapas with a constant breeze and 360-degree views of the ocean and rain forest. The accommodations are elegant cabanas with private bath- rooms, open air showers and breathtaking views. The food is simply out of this world; gourmet vegetarian meals are served with the addition of local fish and seafood.
Accomodations

Some cabanas have private hammocks for lazy afternoon siestas. All have stunning ocean and/or jungle views. There is no electricity in the cabanas. They are illuminated at night with oil lamps and candles. You will be unable to use any small electrical appliances like hair dryers, curling irons or razors.
